Animal Kingdom was the 4th theme park to open at Walt Disney World. It is themed around animals (ranging from the pre-historic era to the fantasy world) and the conservation of the planet.
Recently Animal Kingdom had a complete revamp of an area that was known as Camp Minnie-Mickey and has since become Pandora: The land of Avatar. This area is themed to the box office hit Avatar. Now I know what you are thinking...but that is not a Disney movie. Disney and James Cameron (director and writer) struck up a deal to bring this land to life and James was closely involved in the concept of this themed land. There are 2 rides located in this area and both had long waits ranging up to 3 hours. Both rides offer the FastPass service however you are only able to obtain a fastpass for 1 of the rides per day. We would recommend trying to obtain the FastPass for Flights of Passage which is the better ride, however their are some restrictions with riding depending on a persons size (you are held in at the legs and people with bigger thighs can't ride if the restraints wont close). Disney are currently investigating and trying to make suitable for all.
We stopped by Satu'li Canteen for lunch, Allie was not very hungry so got a blueberry cream cheese mousse (mainly cause of the looks...so pretty!!) and Dave got a salad bowl, that he found scrumptious.
Allie's favourite attraction at this park is called Kilimanjaro Safaris. On this attraction you go on a 20 minute safari and see an assortment of African animals. A fun piece of Disney trivia: Walt Disney wanted to use real animals on the Jungle Cruise attraction found at Disneyland however this did not come to fruition and audio-animatronics were used in their place.
The park is absolutely breathtaking at night. There is even a show that takes place on the river, called Rivers of Light.
On one of the days we had a late lunch/early dinner at Tiffins. We booked the Rivers of Light package which is a prix-fixe 3 course meal and comes with reserved seating for the night time show. This restaurant is table service so reservations are recommended. This is also classified as a signature restaurant meaning it is more on the pricey side than a normal table service restaurant.
Thirst things first (spelling intended), the drinks order. Allie wasn't sure what she wanted so we ordered 2 drinks (one specifically for the light-up floating lotus) with the plan that Dave will get the one she didn't like (he is used to this with cocktails).
All the meals were well presented. Seeing as it was so long ago and we are behind on posting we can't remember what we had exactly. For appetiser, it looks like Allie got some sort of salad and Dave got a meat dish and would have given the eggs to Allie. For dessert, Allie got a chocolate cake and Dave had his usual sorbet.
During our visit, we had a few frozen treats. At one point (waiting in line for Flights of Passage) Dave got an Olaf icy pole. On one afternoon, Allie had heard about how you can get dole whips at Animal Kingdom also (not just at Magic Kingdom), so we had to indulge. Dave got a standard Dole Whip and Allie was treated to an alcoholic dole whip, rum was added. She thoroughly enjoyed it after doing a RunDisney 5k event that morning.
