Walt Disney World Resort

Walt Disney World Resort consists of 4 theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom), 2 water parks (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon), and a downtown shopping district (Disney Springs). The resort also has a variety of Disney owned hotels you may choose to stay at that come with a slew of perks and table service restaurants. There are 2 types of restaurants at Walt Disney World: table service is a sit-down meal that requires a reservation (can be booked180 days in advance and the popular restaurants do hit capacity) where the waiter/waitress comes to you and brings you your meal (don't forget to tip as is custom in the USA) and the other dining option is quick service (no bookings necessary although it can be quite crowded) where you order at a kiosk and await your food that will come on a tray, think McDonalds and KFC (no tipping necessary). We chose to visit a few restaurants at Walt Disney World that were not located in the theme parks, below are our out of park experiences.

A couple of our dining experiences were character meals. This is where you sit down and the characters will come to your table to take photos and sign autographs. It can be quite expensive to do but cut's down on lining up for character meets in the park not to mention the characters are in themed outfits you won't see them in elsewhere. However, if you want a certain character you may still have to line up in park as characters are subject to change.

We went to Chef Mickey's on our first Disney day. This restaurant is located at the Contemporary resort and is just a short walk or monorail ride from Magic Kingdom. Dave was happy to be getting a monorail and kept signing the monorail theme song...uh wrong studio (at the time, now Disney owns Fox so...). Chef Mickeys is a buffet style character meal. At Chef Mickey's the characters are all dressed up like Chefs. Allie's favourite, Donald Duck was very happy to see her and moved Dave out of the photo, but then got Dave back for photos when he saw it was Dave's first visit. We ate a mixture of food and Allie surprised Dave with a gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free 'Dave friendly*' chocolate cake based on Aladdin. *Disney's supplier changed it's recipe so Dave couldn't eat the Aladdin screen print as that now contains dairy.

At Disney Springs (Allie keeps calling Downtown Disney, they changed the name in 2015 and Allie has been going to Disney since 2006), we had lunch at Raglan Road which is an Irish restaurant/bar. We both got fish n chips, albeit Dave's version was allergy friendly and Allie got some kind of dessert that looks delicious...mmm chocolate. On the same day, we got a photo of Dave in his Big Bad Wolf top in front of B.B. Wolf's snack stand, at this point Allie dropped her phone and shattered her screen, but hey it still worked so we could continue documenting our trip. On a different day, we also attended a Cirque Du Soleil show called La Nouba. This was Allie's first time seeing a Cirque Du Soleil show and she thoroughly enjoyed it and Dave appreciated the front row seats and the surprise (Allie booked without his knowledge). This has since been retired and is rumoured to be getting replaced with a more Disney themed Cirque Du Soleil show.

At Disney's Boardwalk Hotel is located a restaurant called Trattoria Al Forno. In the mornings they have a Bon Voyage Adventure breakfast where you can meet Princess Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, and Princess Ariel and Prince Eric. You will get a tray of pastries (served in a frying pan...Rapunzel's favourite accessory) and fruit to share upon sitting down at the table. Here is where Allie was loving Dave's allergies as she had a whole pan to herself (sometimes it can be difficult to find a place to eat so she can get frustrated on the rare occassion), Dave's is the mini frypan you see in the background with allergy friendly pastries. You are then given the option of what you would like as your main dish, Dave chose allergy friendly Mickey waffles while Allie got the pancakes. She may have filled up on all those pastries as she couldn't even eat half. Allie also purchased the kid souvenir cup as she wanted a light up Pascal (Rapunzel's chameleon sidekick) that she clipped to her cardigan, you can see him glowing on her shoulder in the photos.
